Inaugurated impactful Familial Genetic Counseling Clinic

Multidisciplinary patient management integrating molecular testing into routine care

As the founder and an on-going consultant for a national reference Familial Genetics Clinic, Dr. Cabanillas oversaw inter-disciplinary procedures to diagnose and treat rare diseases and hereditary predispositions. The Familial Genetic Counseling Clinic identifies rare conditions and common disorders, integrating molecular testing into everyday transdisciplinary patient care and making a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

In his consultant role, Dr. Cabanillas was in charge of clinical evaluation, risk assessment, genetic counseling and genetic testing for a variety of genetic conditions. Under his guidance, the clinic evolved from using conventional technologies (Sanger sequencing) to adopting the most up-to-date procedures and techniques. Dr. Cabanillas spurred the clinic to work across departments to discover and publish new genetic variants associated with rare conditions, such as hereditary paragangliomas, as well as identifying genotypic information associated with more common disorders, such as head and neck carcinomas.
